head of performance marketing.
a high-growth, founder-led health and wellness CPG DTC brand is looking for a head of performance marketing to take full ownership of a funded $60M+ acquisition engine and lead the specialist teams behind its next phase of global growth.
-
happy mammoth is a founder-led, direct-to-consumer health and supplements company with a loyal repeat-purchase and subscription customer base across the us, europe, australia, and other international markets.
over nine years, the business has grown to serve 36 countries, reach 3.3m+ customers, and sell 12m+ bottles. its products are manufactured in australia.
after six years of sustained growth, happy mammoth is entering its next chapter. the immediate priorities are accelerating revenue and subscription growth, strengthening the acquisition operating system, and creating a structure that can launch new markets and consumer brands more efficiently.
the marketing organisation has recently been reorganised into approximately six to seven cross-functional pods. these cover areas such as the us, europe, conversion creative, Amazon, retention, and future channel or brand launches. pods typically combine media buying, creative strategy, video editing, design, and copywriting.
the company has historically scaled through a Meta-led acquisition engine. that approach worked exceptionally well, but the next phase requires stronger operating discipline and meaningful diversification into channels such as TikTok, AppLovin, YouTube, Google, and native.

the head of performance marketing is happy mammoth’s most senior acquisition leader. reporting directly to founder and ceo matt murphy, this person will lead the performance organisation and take ownership of a funded $60m+ annual media account.
this is not a hands-on media-buying position. the mandate is to lead experienced specialists, establish the KPI framework, run weekly business reviews, audit performance, improve communication across the pods, and give the organisation one clear acquisition strategy and operating cadence.
the role will own:
new-customer acquisition cost, cohort payback, and customer volume
allocation and performance of the funded $60m+ annual paid-media budget
acquisition strategy across markets, brands, and channels
the KPI framework and weekly performance-management cadence
leadership and development of the media-buying and creative teams
alignment between media, creative strategy, conversion, ecommerce, and retention
diversification beyond a historically Meta-heavy channel mix
development of TikTok and other underused or emerging acquisition channels
hiring and team design as the company adds markets, channels, and consumer brands
a close operating partnership with the founder, including evidence-backed challenge and clear recommendations
success means building a disciplined and trusted acquisition organisation: clear goals, accountable teams, faster creative learning, stronger communication, a more resilient channel mix, and a performance function the founder can confidently step back from managing directly.
-
a senior performance marketing, paid acquisition, growth, or ecommerce leader with deep direct-response expertise
experience personally leading approximately $60m+ in annual paid-media spend within one brand or client account
clear accountability for performance and budget allocation, rather than exposure to aggregated portfolio spend
enough technical and commercial depth to earn the respect of experienced media buyers and creative strategists
strong knowledge of Meta-led acquisition alongside experience building or diversifying other channels
fluency in acquisition economics, attribution, creative testing, conversion, and cohort performance
experience designing KPIs, running business reviews, and creating accountability across specialist teams
evidence of developing people, managing managers, and aligning cross-functional groups
the ability to challenge a founder directly and constructively, then commit once a decision is made
a leadership style that combines authority, charisma, listening, and emotional intelligence
comfort leading both introverts and extroverts without needing to be the star of the show
motivation driven by the acquisition number, quality of execution, and strength of the team rather than title or organisational theatre
experience in CPG, DTC, health, wellness, supplements, functional food and beverage, beauty, or personal care is strongly preferred, but not mandatory.
particularly relevant environments include scaled consumer brands such as foodspring, ritual, hims & hers, liquid death, manscaped, celsius, bang energy, poppi, olipop, magic spoon, mud/wtr, native, function of beauty, vital proteins, seed health, and ag1, alongside comparable businesses.
strong agency candidates are also relevant if they personally led approximately $60m+ in annual spend within a single consumer-brand account and have the leadership range to run the function in-house.
additional advantages include:
subscription or repeat-purchase consumer economics
international or multi-market acquisition leadership
experience rebuilding an underperforming acquisition engine
direct ownership of nCAC, cohort payback, or an equivalent new-customer metric
leadership across both media and direct-response creative teams
experience launching new markets, channels, or consumer brands
Amazon or marketplace exposure alongside a strong DTC foundation
this is unlikely to fit someone whose experience is limited to substantially smaller budgets, aggregated agency portfolio spend, brand or communications leadership without acquisition depth, or senior management that has become detached from media, creative, conversion, and performance measurement.
